Designer name: David Saunders
Origin: Grimsby, England
Career highlights: “I have a highlight everyday, but I’d say working with my brother has been the highlight so far. Lulu Kennedy has been a wonder too. I’m very excited about my forthcoming collaborations.”
What are your design signatures? “Bold, vivid geometric prints.”
How would you describe the David David woman? “Intelligent, outgoing and adventurous. My ideal customer is anyone who feels comfortable in David David clothes.”
Name three things that are inspiring you for spring/summer 2010: “Japanese geometrics, vodka and coloured glass.”
Where in London do you find most inspiring? “Everywhere. I soak up inspiration, I don’t scavenge it.”
What sums up quintessential London for you? “Liberty, Hampstead Heath, Brick Lane Market and the Star Pub in Tuffnell Park. Sitting next to a friend makes any venue the perfect spot, no matter where you are.”
This year marks London Fashion Week’s 25th anniversary. What is your most striking LFW memory? “Free ice cream. And of course spending the day in the same building as a bunch of dinosaurs – no, not the old school fashion journalist but rather the big boney guys in the Natural History Museum.”
London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010
Over the last 25 years, London has built a reputation for outstandingly original fashion. What is it about the capital that makes London fashion so unique? “In winter, it’s too cold to go naked. In summer, we try and brighten up the concrete landscapes.
I think we are encouraged in London to be individual, to find something new. Perhaps we become explorers, dissatisfied with the everyday.
It’s difficult to say why London is original… we are all individuals then we walk into the hive of London and feed off the honey. The city is an eye opener and a stimulator due to its occupants. The city attracts attractive minds, and we work together and inspire each other to do better.”
